In 1989 the Delta Queen, the last of the over-night steam-powered sternwheelers, was designated a National Historic Landmark. Here she is at the Floodwall in Maysville. These are a few images from what could be her last trip here to Maysville as her exempton to the SOLAS will expire on 10/31/08 unless granted another reprieve. Enjoy this short Pano Essay onboard the Steamship Delta Queen.

The Orleans Room

This room is the heart of the ship’s nightlife and features a rare ironwood floor. You can notice that the band was rehearsing while I was there getting this image.

Calliope

Here is a view of the Calliope overlooking the Sternwheel. This calliope from 1897 was once part of a circus after it was salvaged from a sunken showboat.

The Golden Antlers

Every year during Kentucky Derby Week the Delta Queen races the Belle of Louisville, another sternwheeler on the Ohio River. This year, 2008, the Delta Queen won and has the honor of wearing the Golden Antlers until next years race. Due to the current situation with the exemption running out for the Delta Queen there might not be a race next year for the Delta Queen. Several days after I took this image, the Delta Queen passed by Louisville for possibly the last time and graciously asked the Belle of Louisville to hold on to the Antlers until the next time that the Delta Queen passes through.

I really like this pano. There is a lot of little things all over the place to look at no matter what direction you are facing.
